Choreography Workshop + Lecture with Katrin Riedel-Kelly

Return ‹

1) The nature of performance and the significance of the perceptive process for creator + performer

The first part of this workshop series is a lecture introducing the main concepts concerning the ‚reading’ of a dance work. The lecture forms the framework for our practical investigation in the second part of the workshop - in this way practice informs theory and vice versa.

Understanding the perceptive process and the nexus of space, sound, performer and movement (the essential ingredients of a performance event) enables us to make conscious choices for the work regarding its meaning, its style, its genre, its capacity to communicate and engage.

This allows us to develop a method of practice and locate our artistic practice within a larger artistic, historical and socio-political framework. Random choices become intentional ones that can be articulated.

2) From lived experience to artistic form: creating – performing – perceiving.

In the practical part of the workshop we will explore different sources for creating material, tools to efficiently develop and manipulate work and last, but not least we will apply the strands of the medium (space, sound etc.) and consider how these shape our work and subsequently affect our viewing.

All development stages of these works will be filmed so that each participant ends up with a portfolio that can be used for future reference. A reading list for further investigation will also be supplied.(please bring your own mini-dv tapes)

The workshop will end with a final showing of the works that have been created.

This workshop is suitable for professionals, students and those with an interest in performance and practice-as-research.

For Whom: The course is for choreographers/dancers/performers as well as people from related areas (such as theatre/literature/visual arts) and with an interest in the perceptive process. For the practical part of the workshop movement knowledge would be essential though.

Price: 65,- € for both workshops.

Please note that the workshop/lecture series will be held in English
